Ear Candling

What Ear Candles are

It is known that ear candling was practised by many ancient civilisations including Aztecs, Greeks, Romans and Aborigines. Historical pictorial records clearly show the use of ear candles in cultures across the globe. Traditional methods used rolled waxed leaves infused with herbs as part of a spiritual ceremony, and today ear candles have evolved from the use of fire, heat, smoke and herbs, which all hold healing qualities. The ear candles used today are thin, hollow linen tubes approximately 7 inches long. They are soaked in bees wax, honey and sage. In the base there is a small plastic ring where the debris from the ear will fall.

How Ear Candles Work

The candles work on the principle that if energy is circulating properly around the body then the individual will be fully healthy and well. Therefore, one of the functions of the ear candles is to re-stimulate the energy around the head and ears. When the candles are lit at the top, the rising air column inside the candle begins to heat up. As the candle burns down it continues to heat up to the top of the rising air column. This creates mild vibrations and suction at the base of the candle, which helps to loosen compacted ear wax. As the ear, nose, sinuses and throat are interconnected, this helps to regulate and balance the pressure in the ears as well as the whole of the upper respiratory system.

What a Ear Candling Treatment Includes

For the ear candle treatment, the client begins by laying down on one side, using cushions for comfort. The holistic therapist will check for the fit of the unlit candle in the client’s exposed ear before lighting the candle. When the candle is lit, the filtered end of the candle is placed gently just inside the ear. It is important to note that the candle is not pushed into the ear and the therapist will always check that the client is comfortable. Clients will be able to hear a distant ‘hissing’ noise from the candle, which can be very relaxing and comforting. The candles are specially designed so that no ash will fall or direct heat will be felt by the client. The therapist will hold the candle in a piece of tissue to further protect the client. The candle will take 8-15 minutes to burn down to the safety mark above the filter before the therapist removes the candle and extinguishes it in water. The client will turn over and this will be repeated on the other ear. The therapist will then ask the client to turn on to their back to perform a gentle drainage massage to the face and scalp. As well as the physical benefits to the ear and respiratory system, this treatment helps to re-balance and restore energy to the client, leaving them feeling relaxed and revitalised.
