Reflexology

What Reflexology Is

Reflexology is a holistic therapy that helps to activate the body’s own natural healing powers. Ancient texts and art has shown that early Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Russians and Egyptians worked on feet to promote good health. Today, reflexology follows these traditional techniques and is based on the principle that there are energy zones that run throughout the body and reflex areas in the feet that correspond to all major organs, glands and body parts. The whole body can be mapped out on to the feet and stimulating various points leads to therapeutic benefit to the client.

How Reflexology Works

Reflexology works based on the principle that energy flows through the body in zones. These zones can sometimes be referred to as ‘meridians’. Reflexology works with ten energy zones that run the length of the body from head to toe, five on each side of the body, ending in each foot and running down the arms into the tips of the fingers. It is believed that these zones run through the body, so that a zone on the front of the body can also be reached from behind. All organs and parts of the body lie along these zones. Eastern medicines state that the body’s life energy or ‘Chi’ can be channelled through these zones. Reflexology works by applying pressure to zones on the feet with the thumbs and fingers to stimulate the entire zone throughout the whole body. For example, working the zone on the foot along which the kidney lies will release vital energy that may be blocked somewhere else in that zone, for example, the eye. Reflexology also works by deeply relaxing the client, which allows the nervous system to calm down and function more normally. Reflexology allows energy to flow, bringing the body, mind and spirit back into balance.

What a Reflexology Treatment Includes

The reflexology treatment begins with a hot towel cleanse to refresh the feet. The client will then lay down on the couch with their feet raised slightly and supported by cushions. The holistic therapist begins by applying a small amount of oil to the client’s feet before performing gentle massage to the feet, legs and ankles. The reflexology treatment involves the holistic therapist working slowly and concisely, often with their thumbs, to apply pressure to the whole surface of the foot. The holistic therapist will work across and between all of the toes, the middle section of the soles of the feet, the heel area, around the ankle and along the top of the feet. At times the therapist may stop to apply pressure to a certain reflex point, which can allow space for energies to flow between the therapist’s hands and the client’s feet. This can be a deeply relaxing experience. To finish, the holistic therapist will use some soft calming movements to massage the feet, to leave the client feeling soothed and unwound.
