Thai Foot Massage

What Thai Foot Massage is

Thai foot massage is an important part of traditional Thai massage and is thought to originate around 2000 years ago. Thai foot massage incorporates elements of Chinese zone therapy and reflexology, that the whole body can be mapped out on to the feet. Stimulating these points leads to therapeutic benefit to the client. Thai foot massage is a treatment of the hands, legs and feet that involves physically stretching and massaging to open up energy lines, along with stimulation of reflex points on the feet and hands.

How Thai Foot Massage Works

Thai foot massage works by stimulating reflex points on the feet, which correspond to major organs and body parts. By applying pressure to these reflex points, energy is created, allowing the body to begin a natural process of relaxed healing. Thai foot massage also involves stretching of the joints in the hips, feet and hands. Again, this allows energy to flow more freely through the body. For further details, please see the Reflexology section.

What a Thai Foot Massage Treatment Includes

For a Thai foot massage it is best if the client wears loose fitting trousers so that the treatment can take place without the need to remove any clothing. The Thai foot massage treatment begins with a warm aroma foot soak, containing fresh ginger and limes to cleanse and refresh the feet. The client will then lay down flat on the couch, supported by cushions if needed. The holistic therapist will gently fully support and bend the client’s leg at the knee, which helps to open up the hip joint. The therapist will then apply a small amount of oil to the client’s feet before performing gentle massage to the feet, legs and ankles. The joints are the foot are carefully stretched and manipulated. Reflexology points on the foot will be stimulated, which involves the holistic therapist working slowly and concisely with their fingers to apply pressure to the whole surface of the foot. At times the therapist may stop to apply pressure to a certain reflex point, which can allow space for energies to flow between the therapist’s hands and the client’s feet. This can be a deeply relaxing experience. To finish, the holistic therapist will use some soft calming movements to massage the feet and ankles, leaving the client feeling relaxed and energised.
